Historic West Jefferson, NC has Friendly People and Notable Talent.

Located in the mountains of North Carolina in a lush green valley with towering mountains above, the small town of West Jefferson, North Carolina comes alive with art and music.  

Within recent years, West Jefferson has become a destination for 'the arts.'  Rightfully so, as the town has a dedicated 'arts district' with street murals, art galleries and the Ashe County Arts Council is located in town.  

The town boasts of paintings by world renowned artist, Ben Long.  His fresco's adorn the wall of  "St. Mary's Episcopal Church" located within the town limits. (Other works by Ben Long can be found in "Holy Trinity Episcopal Church a short drive away in Glendale Springs.) 

The fun begins at 5 pm on certain Friday evenings during the summer, the streets of West Jefferson come alive with strolling musicians entertaining while people stopover from one art gallery to another.  It's a delightful and a pleasurable time visiting with the gallery owners and other art lovers while admiring the art work and enjoying food and drink.

Two Friday evenings of each month, there is entertainment on stage in West Jefferson's Backstreet Park. 

 Musicians performing all types of music  from "chamber to bluegrass," entertain while friends, newcomers and neighbors converse and enjoy each other's company.  If the music of the evening is lively, it is not unusual for the crowd to take to the streets for an evening of fun 'dancing in the streets.'

Come early or stay late and enjoy dinner at one of several town's restaurants.  And, while you are here , be sure to take a stroll by the many street murals or visit unique shops along the way, see the historic wall of West Jefferson's photos from  the early 1900's and today's contemporary cows at Ashe County Cheese Factory.  West Jefferson is a fun town, with fun people and many things to do and see.


If you are lucky, you will be in town for a performance by Ashe County Little Theater. 

 The performing arts include Ashe County Little Theater and their location is the Ashe County Civic Center,  located at the foot of Mount Jefferson State Park  just outside West Jefferson town limits.

Early arrivals may want to drive to the top of Mount Jefferson State Park with over 1,000 acres of natural woodlands, hiking trails, picnic areas and some of the most beautiful scenic views in the world.

At the summit, Mount Jefferson proudly stands at 4,980 feet above sea level, over looking the town of West Jefferson and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.

One would never believe a small mountain town could have so many friendly people with so much talent.  It is a great place to retire or have a summer home.

History of the Christmas Tree

Choosing an Ashe County, NC Christmas Tree  History of the Christmas tree dates far back, before our traditional concepts of Christmas. The Christmas tree and its evergreen boughs is one of the few symbols of hope and continued life that has carried on from the ancients.  It has a heritage that extends to the Pagans, the ancient Celts, even the earliest Romans all of whom used the sacred boughs as a sign to mark the winter solstice. The winter solstice marks the longest night and the shortest day of year in the Northern Hemisphere and generally falls on the 21st or 22nd of December.  For the ancient Pagans, winter solstice marked the period when the sun god, weakened by the fall, would begin to get well with the promise of a return to spring and a strong summer.  For the ancient Celts, Druid Priests would mark their temples with boughs from evergreens as a sign of everlasting life.  Even Vikings regarded the trees as Balder, the sun god’s plant and would cut them down
